WHO WE ARE
Toronto’s third largest public gallery welcomes and entertains 20,000 visitors annually. It was established in 1987 under the beneficent patronage of Toronto businessman, Joseph Carrier. Often referred to as “a mini-Guggenheim”, the Gallery has 21,000 square feet of exhibition space and 750 linear feet of wall space on three circular levels, topped by a giant skylight! The Carrier Gallery is situated on 12 landscaped acres surrounding the Columbus Centre, the Italian community’s gift to multicultural Toronto.
We offer a variety of art programs (painting and drawing) for adults, ages 18 years and up. The classes are taught by instructor Sam Paonessa.
The Gallery features contemporary art in photography, painting, sculpture, and design. Curators and volunteers conduct guided tours for more than 4,000 students every year.
Ken Danby’s 1998 exhibition, which attracted 10,000 visitors and set a Canadian record for sale of new work, Anthony Quinn, Benetton’s Oliviero Toscani and First Nations artists of Manitoulin Island, to name just a few.
The Gallery has displayed original work by Leonardo Da Vinci, Piranesi, Picasso and other historical masters. In 2000, we held the official millennium exhibition for the City of Toronto entitled Toronto’s Own: Celebrating People in Art and Artifacts.
The Gallery maintains a growing, permanent collection of 200 contemporary works of art.
The Carrier Gallery places strong emphasis on work by emerging, mid career and senior Canadian artists of Italian heritage. We also promote cross-cultural understanding and appreciation, through culturally specific exhibitions. We have received artists and their work from many countries, including Japan, Russia, Italy, Holland, Austria, United States, Korea, China, Uruguay, Ecuador, Chile, Iran and Israel.
