FOR THE MASSES – A PHOTOGRAPHIC PILGRIMAGE BY JAMES SWARTZ

Was on May 3, 2012 – June 4, 2012

Opening Reception
Thursday, May 3, 2012
6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. (artist also present May 4, 2012 from 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.)

James C. Swartz is a professional visual artist working in Toronto. Urban, rural, and industrial landscapes have long been a subject of intrigue for Swartz. His imagery explores the intricate link between society and nature, combining the raw elements of growth, development, desertion, and decay into eloquent, highly expressive visions that find beauty and humanity in the most unlikely of places. During a 2011 pilgrimage in Northern France, Swartz was enraptured by the beauty of the Church. This exhibit includes select images of France and Italy, and focuses on the centre of the communities of Normandy and Paris – the church. The glorious XII and XIII century Romanesque frescoes and murals, which embellish the small pilgrimage churches of the Loir Valley, were painted with earth and ground stones on wet plaster. They are a vibrant part of this exhibit. Swartz's vision of the Church is truly "for the masses".
