Abilities Festival

For immediate release, Thursday, October 27 - Tonight, CONNECTIONS 2, a unique and exciting art exhibition opens at the Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery in Columbus Centre.

This not to be missed, international, juried show, will kick off Abilities Festival, a four day, world class showcase event, celebrating the talent, creativity, and vision of artists with disabilities.

Works from more than 80 artists from across Canada and the United States, plus countries as far away as Malawi, India, Morocco, Columbia, Cameroon and France were evaluated on aesthetic merit alone by jurors Flavio Belli and Teodoro Dragonieri. The result is over 55 works by a diverse range of over 45 established and emerging Canadian and international artists.

This intriguing, engaging, and vibrant array of watercolors, oils, pastels, acrylics, mixed media, collages, fabrics, photography and more will be on exhibit from October 27, 2005 through November 20, 2005.

"The Abilities Festival has accomplished something revolutionary with CONNECTIONS 2," said Flavio Belli. "It dispels myths about disability and reveals truths about vision and ability, thought and action, idea and result, passion and practicality. CONNECTIONS 2 causes us to question our presumptions about ability versus disability and demonstrates how the distinction between the two is dissolved in the act of creativity. I was very impressed by the quality and diversity of work submitted to the competition; it made our work as jurors both challenging and rewarding."

From the sensual and enticing soot on paper work of Ngay Ta to the cyanotype print toned photograph of Sheila Ernst-Bofano, to the playful images by Allison Merriweather and the steel sculptures of Patricia Goodrich. With a host of edgy contemporary art works by Canadian and international artists, CONNECTIONS 2 promises to stimulate, move and entertain.

Connections 2 follows CONNECTIONS, held in 2003, the first international, juried art exhibition, by artists with disabilities held in Toronto. The exhibition was a tremendous success, showcasing the beauty, quality and diversity of art.
