This unique exhibit displays illustrations of Dante's Divina Commedia by leading artists of the 19th and 20th century. The etchings by Gustave Dore, on loan from the Casa di Dante in Abruzzo, are from the Sonzogno Edition, Milan: 1880. Dore worked extensively in Paris, illustrating major publications such as the Bible; Milton's Paradise Lost; and Balzac's Contes drolatiques, as well as the Divina Commedia. Vittorio Alinari, of the Alinari Studios in Florence, sponsored a competition for artists to interpret the Inferno, the Purgatorio, and the Paradiso in their own particular style. The current exhibit shows a range of these drawings, published by Alinari in 1902/03. Beautiful colour lithographs by Genoese artist Amos Nattini display his intense attraction to Dante's poetics. These works were completed between 1923 and 1941. World-renowned Spanish artist Salvador Dali completed a cycle of prints in 1964, illustrating cantos from each book of the Commedia. He conceived the first exhibition of these works in triptych format, one from each book. That order has been followed in preparing these stunning works for this show.
In addition to the artists' illustrations on display, the Gallery also contains examples of rare published volumes of Dante's great masterpiece, including an exquisite Marcolini Francesco edition, Venezia, 1544, and a fine facsimile edition of the original manuscript, published by Ulrico Hoepli, Milano, 1921.
