Dance is a rich and ever-evolving art form. DanzArts Toronto is thrilled to have such a fantastic team of professional, knowledgeable and inspiring faculty and staff providing our students with the best in dance education.
Kathryn is an independent choreographer, teacher, dancer, artistic director and producer based in Toronto. Her choreographic and performance history spans formal competitions, in-theatre performance, film and video.
She has created and performed in works for Fashion Cares AIDS Benefit, fringe: FIDA, Celebrate Toronto Street Festival, Villa Charities Venetian Ball and countless independent projects. Most recently she curated the Urban Choreographer’s Serious for the Pan American Games 1 year countdown to the 2015 Games. Her work and students continue to receive recognition and acclaim for innovative choreography and excellence in dance. Additional credits include works for film and television such as Insight Productions, Bpm-Tv, and Alliance Atlantis. Kathryn has studied extensively with top performing artists in Los Angeles at the Edge Performing Arts Center and at Alvin Ailey and Broadway Dance Center in New York City. She graduated from York University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in dance and formally trained at Randolph School for the Arts. Kathryn is co-founder and artistic director of thamovement , a dance production and performance company that produces the hit show Toronto’s Original Choreographer’s Ball.
Interim Artistic Director
Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Tara Pillon is a professional dancer, choreographer and dance educator. She graduated with Honours from Ryerson University, where she received a BFA in Performance Dance.
Tara is the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of ACE Dance Theatre and The Ballet Lab. Tara has performed professionally with Ballet Creole, Gadfly’s Urban Dance Repertory Company, emiMOTION Dance Company, Avinoam Silverman Dance, and Creativiva. She has participated in Fresh Blood Festival and Dance Ontario Weekend with choreography by David Earle and Gadfly. She has also participated in Gadfly’s very own TUDS Festival, The National Ballet School’s Sharing Dance event, and WeDay at the Air Canada Centre. Recently, Tara was cast as a dancer in the Hallmark film A Nutcracker Christmas and in Diversion a dance film by Avinoam Silverman. Tara has choreographed for Creativiva for events such as the Italian Contemporary Film Festival, Ricarda’s Grand Opening and the Allstate Honor Ring Banquet. Tara received her Certificate for Russian Pedagogy in Amsterdam, Netherlands and is an in-demand teacher and choreographer throughout the GTA. Tara is excited to lead the DanzArts students through the 2017-18 season.
Kaitlin is originally from Wetaskiwin, Alberta, where she studied and danced competitively at Andy and Tina’s Dance FX for 17 years. Upon graduating high school, Kaitlin attended Red Deer College and completed her Music Performance diploma (2009) and her Technical Theatre Production diploma (2011).
In 2011, Kaitlin has the opportunity to work at the Banff Centre for the Arts in their Dance Masters program, where she had the pleasure of working with Artists from the National Ballet of Canada, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Alberta Ballet, Ballet Jörgen Canada, Boston Ballet and Ballet BC. During her time in Banff, Kaitlin also worked with Giocanda Barbuto (choreographer), Jean-Yves Esquerre (Artistic Director – Dutch National Ballet Academy), Lindsay Fischer (Ballet Master – National Ballet of Canada) and Mandy-Jayne Richardson (Ballet Mistress – National Ballet of Canada). She moved to Toronto in 2012 to work with Ballet Jörgen Canada for their 25th anniversary and Stage Manage the world premiere of Swan Lake, which toured extensively across Canada. Kaitlin recently worked with Toronto Dance Theatre as the Assistant Production Stage Manager, where she worked extensively with Christopher House, Jeanine Durning, Joanne Kotze, and Ame Henderson. Kaitlin is incredibly excited to be a part of the DanzArts Toronto team and is looking forward to sharing her love of dance and the arts with the dancers and their families.
Hip Hop & Musical Theatre
Lindsay started dancing at the age of 4 and has never stopped. Realizing her love for dance she began studying at Unionville School of the arts and for the past 3 years Lindsay has continued her journey at George Brown Dance.
She began in the Commercial Dance program broadening her entertainment skills through singing and acting and after graduating decided to continue on in the Performance Dance Studies program to solidify her training and technique. Through the program Lindsay has had the pleasure of working with amazing chorographers such as, Daryl Tracy, Gadfly, Nicola Pantin, Dana Bondy, Derek Sangster, Hanna Kiel, and Anisa Tejpar and has really started to find herself as an artist. She was also accepted and attended ProArte Danza SIP 2014 and Kenny Pearl’s Emerging Artist Summer Intensive 2014 and 2015 working with amazing choreographers Hanna Kiel, Alysa Piers, Ryan Lee and Gadfly. Lindsay is trained in a wide variety of dance styles and has had several performance opportunities working with other known choreographers such as Scott Fordham, Derick Robinson and Chris Knowles. Lindsay also teaches in the competitive and recreational program at Wonderland Dance Company and is a teaching assistant at, The Dance Project workshop. She has also recently accepted a position as a fitness instructor at Barreworks Studio and with her love and strong passion for dance, she is going to push forward into the future and keep reaching for more. Her overall goal is to encourage learning, self-expression, and inspire. “Dance enables you to lose yourself and find yourself at the same time.”
Shpresa is a passionate and knowledgeable instructor with over 25 years teaching ballet to both recreational students and aspiring dancers.
Her training is extensive having studied at the Albanian National Ballet school in her youth, she later graduated with honours from the Academy of Fine Arts in Tirana, Albania and then went on to achieve a PhD in Ethono Choreography. Bace traveled throughout Europe to share her skills and knowledge of Albanian folk dances and classical ballet. She has taught ballet in Italy, Albania and Canada. Bace also worked in Bonn, Germany in Culture and Education. She has received many awards over the years for her excellent work in dance, education and culture; among them are the Italian Ministry of Culture Awards and the German Academic Exchange Service award. We are thrilled to have her share her expertise with our students at DanzArts Toronto!
Mary Anne Campbell
RAD Ballet, Jazz, Conditioning
Mary Anne Campbell holds an Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performance Dance from Ryerson University, as well as a Bachelor of Education as a specialist in dance from York University.
Mary Anne is an Associate member and a registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance, as well as an ADAPT TTS in Jazz and Tap. Mary Anne’s teaching has taken her nationally and internationally from London, to Toronto, to Trinidad and Tobago. Most recently Mary Anne has taught dance and drama at University Academy in West Yorkshire, United Kingdom for the last 2 years. Mary Anne’s choreography has been seen on stage and film. She has choreographed for the Fringe Festival, fFIDA International Dance Festival, In a White Room, Oakridge Secondary School, and was the resident choreographer at Toronto’s Solar Stage. Her performance career has included stage, film, entertainment, and music videos.
Part Time Company Choreographer - Jazz
Alana Merdzan resides in Toronto and currently attends Ryerson University. She graduated with honors from Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts, where she received numerous dance awards.
She is a passionate dance artist who is constantly evolving. She has danced competitively in Ballet, Acro, Jazz, Lyrical, Contemporary, Pointe, Hip Hop and Modern winning many high score, overall, scholarships and special awards for her performances. Alana started her dance career at age 8 when she was accepted into the National Ballet School of Canada’s associates program. She has also trained under the direction of Kimberly Glasco, former principal dancer at NBS. Alana has performed several times at the Toronto Catholic District School Board Dance Festival and was cast the role of Clara in Cardinal Carter’s version of The Nutcracker. Also she had the privilege to attend the Miss Dance Canada Pageant on two separate occasions. Alana plans to continue dancing for many years as it is an integral part of her identity, and is thrilled to be a part of the DanzArts Toronto faculty, sharing her passion and love for dance.
Sophia began dancing at the age of 3 and she developed a strong passion for dance ever since! Sophia’s passion for performing on stage developed once she entered the competitive program at age 6.
Within her program, she was trained in Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Contemporary, Modern, Tap, Acro, Hip Hop, and Musical Theatre. Sophia had the pleasure of travelling throughout Canada and the United States to compete in several Regional and National competitions. Throughout the various competitions, she received many overall and special awards that recognized her emotional expression in her solos, and scholarships for various dance teams throughout the country. Sophia is a graduate from the St. Elizabeth Catholic High School Regional Arts Program where she majored in dance. The program helped to strengthen and educate Sophia as a dancer, choreographer, and a student. She also participated in the annual school musicals, Footloose, and Anything Goes which showcased her talents in dance, vocals and drama. Sophia graduated with Honours from York University majoring in Sociology in 2015, and is now currently enrolled in the 2 Year Consecutive Bachelor of Education program at Lakehead University in Orillia, where she will be qualified to teach in elementary schools from Kindergarten to Grade 6. She is very excited to join the DanzArts team, and to share her love and passion for dance with the students.
Heather started out at the age of 5 as a figure skater and gymnast and only started dancing at the age of 8 in order to improve her competitive skating. This is when dance became her true passion.
She danced at Lorri’s Dance Place Unlimited as a competitive dancer. She took jazz, tap, acro and ballet. This is where her teaching career began. Heather has completed her examinations through British Association Teacher of Dance (B.A.T.D) in Jazz and Tap her Dance in Ballet. Heather attended the Etobicoke School of Arts from grade 9 to grade 11 where she was then accepted to Silverthorne Collegiate Institute and a graduate of the High Performer Program for Gifted Athletes. Heather is also a Graduate of the Computer Sales and Marketing Program and the General Arts & Sciences Program at Humber College. Heather is still continuing her education at Humber College working on her Fitness Leadership Program Diploma. Heather has been teaching for several years and is well known in the world of dance as a dedicated, hardworking and passionate instructor who strongly believes that everyone has a chance to shine. She has taught and choreographed routines for competitive and non competitive students at several studios all over Ontario. Heather has won many overall awards as well as top scores at several competitions throughout Canada and the United States. Heather continues to teach for several local studios and commits her true passion to continuing her education in dance through teaching and through the eyes of her students. She truly believes that dance is an expression of the soul that is hidden within us and everybody should find the time to let it out and express it.
Company Acro, Contemporary
Holding an Honours BFA from York University, Jennifer Robichaud has had extensive dance training in many disciplines, specializing in jazz and contemporary forms. Jennifer co-founded Larchaud Dance Project in 2004 and currently holds the position as Artistic Director.
Her performance credits include LDP productions (Gridlock/15,Elegant Beast/12, Fossil/12, Game Over/10, Back to X/09, Caution/07, SHINJIRU/06, Stript Bare/05), Porch View Dances/14, Nuit Blanche11/08/07, Illuminite/10, GCDF/10, Beats Breaks and Culture/09, Fringe Shanghai/06, TIDF/06, Wintercity Festival/06 and commercial work. Jennifer currently works as a collaborator with Anandam Dancetheatre, a performer with AKA Dance, and was a featured choreographer on the Gemini-nominated documentary series Freedom which airs on Bravo. She leads countless workshops in the city as part of Larchaud Dance Project, and has been involved with many youth programming and initiatives in the city. Jennifer is also a sought after acro and contemporary instructor/ award-winning choreographer for many competitive studios in Toronto and across Ontario.
Jessica was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia and began dancing at 13, and teaching at 16. She competed in several east coast dance competitions and performed with her dance team Freezone Dance all year round at local charity events, concerts, schools and for local musical artists.
At 23, she was the choreographer of the dance troupe for a professional basketball team in Halifax and also the choreographer for a few Canadian artists. At the age of 20 she began to travel to Los Angeles every year to train with the top choreographers and dancers in the industry. In 2008, Jessica moved to California to pursue dance as a career and continued to travel home to Canada to judge and teach at dance conventions/competitions. In 2009, Jessica moved to Toronto and continues to teach, inspire, and mentor young dancers. This is Jessica’s 3rd year with DanzArts Toronto teaching both recreational and competitive groups.
Catherine-Marie has been dancing with the Columbus Centre since the age of four; she is currently a student at Loretto Abbey C.S.S and a graduate from the DanzArts dance program. Throughout the years she has trained in ballet, jazz, contemporary, acrobatics and lyrical.
She has also competed with our company, and achieved many medals for multiple solos, duets and group dances. At the age of 13 Catherin-Marie decided to stop dancing and further more share her love of dance by assisting with multiple kinderdance classes throughout the years. During the years she learned that volunteering is a way of sharing her passion for dance, which creates a beginning for young dancers. Catherine-Marie is thrilled to be a part of the DanzArtz Toronto dance faculty, and is excited to start sharing her passion for dance as an instructor.
Part Time Company Choreographer – Ballet, Jazz
Anastasia Wiebe started her dance career in her home town of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Her training began with Maritime Dance Academy and continued at Dartmouth Dance Academy, Leica Hardy School of Dance and Dance Zone Performing Arts Center when she realized her passion and need for more intense training during her years in school.
She emerged herself in many different sides of the dance world, Competing for many years at local competitions and also performing in more concert work in her later years in Dartmouth. She performed in Symphony Nova Scotia’s The Nutcracker for 4 years. She has attended Ballet Jorgen’s Summer intensive, White Mountain Dance Festival, Paris Dance Tour, The Entity Dance Tour and AXIS Connect Summer intensive in her summers, traveling all over the world. After Graduating from high school she moved to New York City to continue her studies at Peridance Capezio Center. She has completed the two year program having trained in both the Ballet/Contemporary and commercial styles. Trying to stay as well rounded as she can she studies in Ballet, pointe, modern, contemporary, improvisation, jazz, hiphop, heels and theatre. Her main focus and style as a dancer however is formed around contemporary. She has performed at Short Dances in Toronto, on Good Morning America for Post Modern Jukebox, and performed and choreographed on MTV’s new series Say it with Song. She is full time faculty at The Entity Tour in the Maritimes and the Project Coordinator of Nostos Collective Dance Association Toronto branch. She has performed works by Robert Battle, Lar Lubovitch, Hofesh Shechter, Aszure Barton, Alexandra Damiani, Sarah Elgart, Vincent Patterson, Candace Brown, Cheryl Copeland, Diego Funes, Charlotta Ofverholm, Michale Oliva, Igal Perry, Marlena Wolfe, Jesse Zarrit, and Leica Hardy. Her current home base is Toronto, where she is working and training hard. She is beginning to expand her choreographing and teaching careers as well.
