Villa Colombo Toronto Designated Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO)
Villa Colombo has been selected by the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario to become a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) over the period of the next three years.
This is a dynamic partnership that focuses on making a positive impact on patient care though evidence-based practice. The BPSO initiative has been a great success. It provides support to organizations that have formally agreed to implement and evaluate multiple RNAO best practice guidelines over a three year period.
RNAO provides support for implementation through training, access to all available resources, reporting prototypes, Best Practice Champions Network including the Champion Workshops, the Implementation Toolkit and Educator’s Resource, BPG APPs and other implementation resources. RNAO also engages with the BPSO Host in regular meetings, and offers expert mentorship and consultation on guideline dissemination, implementation, uptake, sustainability and evaluation. Furthermore, the BPSO Host and BPSO are paired with mentor organizations, who have already gone through the BPSO Program.
Selected Best Practice Guidelines to be Implemented:
1) Preventing and addressing neglect and abuse in the elderly
2) Promoting safety: Alternative approaches to the use of restrains
3) Assessment and management of pain

Villa Colombo Toronto Residents Enjoy Art Lessons, Yoga Therapy in November
The residents of Villa Colombo had an opportunity to enjoy an evening of art, food, wine and music led by local Italian artist Nick Biagini in November. The program has been shown to deliver benefits to seniors, including opportunities for self-expression, enhanced cognitive functioning and improved motor skills. In addition, arts programs decrease stress levels in the elderly, promote memory and increase enjoyment in the residents’ lives! This program began in November and will continue into 2018.
Residents also continue to participate in a special yoga therapy session led by Elaine Florio, a yoga therapist who believes that ‘if you breathe, you can do yoga’. The residents are able to enjoy the benefits of yoga while looking out onto the peaceful views of our gardens. Residents are able to engage in new and stimulating ways which affords wonderful opportunities to build new relationships and have fun. Yoga relaxation techniques have been shown to improve brain function and movement in elderly persons as well as enhance mood and reduce anxiety.
