Villa Colombo Homes for the Aged Inc., under the guidance of its Board of Governors, has devoted 40 years to delivering excellent care to its residents and families, and community users of its programs and services; this is largely due to the excellent relationships between various stakeholders and the commitment, dedication and support from residents, staff and families.
However, the level and complexity of care needs is changing and it is evident that in order to remain a leader in long term care, we must look for new ways to deliver the care and services we provide while maintaining our unique cultural environment.
As the long-term care industry becomes more complex, the Board of Governors, as part of its mandate for strategic development, has elected to transition the day-to-day management of the home to Extendicare Assist Canada, one of Canada’s largest providers of long-term care management services.
Villa Colombo Homes for the Aged Inc. is professionally managed by Extendicare Assist Canada.

In October 2015, Villa Colombo was fully accredited for 2015-2019 by Accreditation Canada, the national accrediting body for health services in Canada. The four-year accreditation recognizes that Villa Colombo meets national standards of excellence in quality care and service, cares about client safety and continues to strive for high quality health care. Full accreditation status is only granted when an organization meets all of Accreditation Canada’s required organizational practices (ROPs) and at least 90 per cent of its designated high priority criteria.
Villa Colombo Homes for the Aged (Toronto) was awarded ‘Accreditation with Exemplary Standing,’ the highest level of performance recognition; the achievement of excellence in meeting the requirements of the Qmentum accreditation program.
Accreditation Canada commended Villa Colombo Toronto for going above and beyond the requirements of the Qmentum accreditation program and for demonstrating excellence in quality improvement. The surveyors also commented that the Villa Colombo Toronto team had “open communication,” that they were “passionate and proud,” and were a “wonderful asset to the community.”
Accreditation is a voluntary and independent process that health service organizations use to evaluate and improve the quality of care and services. It is an opportunity for Villa Colombo to be evaluated against national standards of excellence and to identify opportunities for improvement. The process is a continuous learning and improvement cycle that spans over a three-year period.
