UPPER GALLERY Marco Sassone, “Home on the Streets”
g Opening Reception: January 24, 2019
g Exhibition Dates: Thursday, January 24 – Sunday, April 21
The personal tragedy of homelessness and its seemingly permanent place in our urban landscape are the themes of the artist’s exhibition. Originally executed by Marco Sassone over the course of four years (1990 – 1994), the original 15 large-scale oil paintings and 20 smaller black and white drawings depict portraits of the homeless as well as “landscapes” in which these people become an integral part of the urban scenery. Over a period of two years, Sassone completely immersed himself in the homeless population of San Francisco, listening to their stories, learning about their lives and the different routes they took to end up on the streets. Out of this journey came this collection of deeply personal paintings and drawings, which remind us of both the humanity and anonymity of these individuals, whom we pass every day on our sidewalks. The exhibition Home on the Streets that will be on display at the Columbus Centre includes selected additional work executed over the past 25 years.
ATRIUM A & B Leah Denbok (with Tim Denbok), “Nowhere to Call Home”
g Exhibition Dates: Thursday, January 24 – Friday, March 22
Leah Denbok is a Toronto-based portrait photographer who has reached out to homeless people in Toronto in a collaborative effort of story-telling and camerawork. At only 18 years of age, she has created a beautifully produced portfolio of 20 black and white images offering an extraordinarily empathetic and powerful perspective of a large, marginalized portion of society. Leah’s photographs and stories accompany senior artist Marco Sassone’s exhibition of paintings and drawings in the Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery. Both compelling exhibitions emphasize the commitment of Villa Charities to matters of social relevance to our contemporary society.
