Capital Investment Projects Continue at Villa Charities

Villa Charities continues with the multi-year project initiated in 2018 to repair and replace aging facilities and infrastructure and made several significant capital investments during the year.

An external consultant was engaged to assess the condition of all VCI properties and identify deficiencies and replacements required over the next decade. The assessment, conducted by Stantec Consulting Ltd., identified approximately $11 million of priority work over the first three years. VCI spent a little over $1 million in 2018 on repairing and replacing aging facilities and infrastructure. The report also indicated that over the next 10 years $20 million will be needed to address the much-needed building repairs and maintenance. Work completed or initiated in 2018 included:

  • Replacement of HVAC equipment (boilers and chillers) at the Columbus Centre
  • Hydro vault repairs at Columbus Centre, Casa Abruzzo and Casa Del Zotto
  • Generator retrofits at Villa Colombo Toronto, Caboto Terrace, Casa Del Zotto, Casa Abruzzo and Columbus Centre
  • Asphalt repairs throughout the Villa Charities campus
  • Roof repairs at Casa Abruzzo (child care area)
  • Replacement of fire-rated doors at Villa Colombo Toronto and Casa Del Zotto
  • Fire panel upgrades at Caboto Terrace and Columbus Centre
  • IT infrastructure upgrades at Columbus Centre and Villa Charities campus
  • Security infrastructure upgrades at Casa Abruzzo and Villa Charities campus

Other projects completed or initiated in 2018 included:

  • Replacement of the Columbus Centre front doors, and installation of push button openers for residential building laundry room doors
  • Installation of TV screens in residential building lobbies to inform residents about VCI programs, events and services
  • Upgrading of the Villa Colombo Toronto main common room and painting of all patient rooms, nurses’ stations and common rooms
  • Painting of various interior spaces in other buildings and of outdoor statues and fountains
  • Ongoing renovation of units, new LED lighting and other upgrades at all three seniors’ apartments
  • Landscaping improvements
  • Repair and restoration of marble
  • Installation of artwork from Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery in residential buildings
