A Talk with Leandro Da Silva, Volunteer at Villa Colombo Toronto

Q. Tell me a little about yourself.

A. My name is Leandro Da Silva and I am a 24 year-old Portuguese Canadian. I am currently working in the security field but my near future goals are to become a law enforcement officer in the next 1-2 years

Q. Why did you decide to volunteer with Villa Colombo Toronto? Why is this work important to you?

A.  I decided to volunteer with Villa Colombo because it gave me my very first job back in 2010. I really enjoyed the elderly community even though I worked in the catering department. We would continuously share nostalgic stories about back home and discuss our experiences.

Q.What is the best part about volunteering with Villa Colombo Toronto?

A. The best part about volunteering with Villa Colombo is seeing all the familiar faces. The community is nostalgic, familiar and comforting.

Q. Volunteering is often a two-way street; the volunteer often learns and benefits just as much as the people they are assisting. What is one thing you have learned or one benefit you have received from volunteering at Villa Colombo Toronto?

A. With a future in law enforcement in mind, volunteering at Villa Colombo will allow me to develop my skills in a variety of ways. Statistically, elders around the globe often suffer more emotionally than any other groups. I hope to develop strong bonds and relationships with them. I’m here to give them a sense of purpose in exchange for a humbling experience on my end.

A Talk with Tony Bucco, Volunteer at Villa Colombo Toronto

Q: Tell me a little about yourself.

A: I have been volunteering at Villa Colombo Toronto since July 1988. I am 49 years old with lots of energy to give to volunteering. I enjoy playing the accordian player and I like to play for the residents during music hour and other musical events. I really enjoy being involved in the Meals on Wheels program through Villa Colombo and making sure the volunteer drivers pick up meal bags on time. I always make sure that all meal bags get returned to the kitchen and are cleaned and ready for the next day.

Q:  Why did you decide to volunteer with Villa Colombo Toronto?  Why is this work important to you?

A: I like my time at Villa Colombo. It allows me to volunteer and do something good for others. It gets me out of the house and I learn things that I can use in other areas of my life. Volunteering also makes me a better person.

Q: What is the best part about volunteering with Villa Colombo Toronto?

A: My favourite part is playing the accordian to make residents happy. I also really enjoy going good things that others can enjoy and making sure all the meals for the Meals on Wheels program get picked up and delivered, so that seniors get to eat a good meal.

Q:  What is one thing you have learned about yourself or the way you live your life from volunteering at Villa Colombo Toronto?

A: I’ve learned that it’s important to help those that are in need and I’ve also learned to pitch in at home more and help complete everyday chores, such as taking the dog for a walk, washing the vehicles and cutting the grass.
