Coro Italia Toronto To Perform at Villa Colombo Toronto
On Wednesday, August 14, Coro Italia Toronto will be performing by the Fountain at Villa Colombo Toronto for the residents and their families. Founded in 1979, the Coro Italia Toronto choir celebrates and honours Italian culture with Italian folklore songs and dancing.
Villa Colombo Toronto To Host Monthly Family Support Group
On Wednesday, June 26, Villa Colombo Toronto will host their next family support group session at the Family Resource Centre. A range of topics will be covered, including the understanding of Alzheimer’s and dementia, the benefits of Long-Term Care and more. Villa Colombo Toronto Seniors’ Month Events in June
June is Seniors’ Month and it is a time to honour all of the wonderful contributions our seniors have made to our community. In celebration of this special month, Villa Colombo Toronto will be offering a variety of special events. On June 10, North Toronto Community Band will perform in Sala Caboto at 6:30 pm. Other events include a Bingo afternoon on June 11 at 1:30pm and our annual Porchetta and Beer Night on June 12 at 6:30pm.
North York Concert Band Perform at Villa Colombo Toronto
On May 23, the North York Concert Band performed for the residents and their families in Sala Caboto. The North York Concert Band is a community-based ensemble of approximately 50 musicians and performs a wide variety of concerts for the general public including nursing homes, hospitals and for many other organizations.
Villa Colombo Toronto Offers Horticulture Therapy for Residents
This spring, Villa Colombo Toronto is offering a new Horticulture Therapy program to encourage residents to participate in gardening activities that will help improve their physical and mental health, as well as promoting socialization. At the end of each session, the plants will be sold to family members, staff and visitors to help support the program.
Villa Colombo Toronto Hosts Day of Recollection Ceremony
On April 9, Villa Colombo Toronto hosted their bi-annual Day of Recollection. Approximately 110 people participated in a day of prayer and recollection in preparation for Easter. Villa Colombo Toronto Celebrates National Volunteer Week
This week, Villa Colombo Toronto is celebrating National Volunteer Week. The dedicated volunteers were honoured through several events including a special volunteer recognition lunch. We would like to express our thanks to our generous volunteers for their continued contributions to Villa Colombo Toronto. National Volunteer Week is April 7-13, 2019.
Villa Colombo Toronto Introduces Francesca the Cat
Villa Colombo Toronto recently adopted an animatronic cat named Francesca as part of their Behavioural Support Ontario (BSO) program to provide comfort and companionship to our seniors. This robotic feline has lifelike tendencies and sensors that allows it to respond in realistic ways when interacted with. VCT plans to adopt more animatronic cats to help residents cope with the agitation and anxieties that often accompanies dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. On March 21, Villa Colombo Toronto celebrated Social Work week with a bake sale in support of the Behavioural Support Ontario program. All money raised from the bake sale will be used to purchase more cats.
Activity Professionals Awareness Week at Villa Colombo Toronto
Last week, Villa Colombo Toronto celebrated Activity Professionals Awareness week, to honour all of the staff who provide social, physical and recreational programs to help enrich the lives of our residents. On March 5, residents and their families were invited to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment and treats to celebrate the occasion.

Villa Colombo Toronto Implements Clinical Web Portal to Improve Care for Residents
Villa Colombo Toronto has recently implemented the ConnectingOntario ClinicalViewer to provide our staff with a comprehensive view of each resident’s journey through the health care system. This web-based portal will provide real-time access to digital health records including laboratory results, hospital visits, mental health care information and more, to improve our workflow, efficiency and help us make faster, better-informed care decisions.
Villa Colombo Toronto to Hold Coffee Tasting for Residents
On February 5, the Food Services department at Villa Colombo Toronto will be sampling coffee to identify the tastiest and most preferred option among the residents. Our residents and their families are invited to enjoy a variety of coffee options in exchange for their feedback and an afternoon of music and treats. Happy Hour at Villa Colombo Toronto
Join us every month for our evening “Happy Hour” in the piazza of Villa Colombo Toronto to socialize and enjoy some entertainment. This month, we will have performance by Claudio Santaluce, who will playing the accordion and the mandolin, on January 24, then Dario and Albert will be performing a duet on piano and guitar on January 31.

Villa Colombo Shows Appreciation for Volunteers with Christmas Luncheon
On December 6, our volunteers at Villa Colombo Toronto were treated to a Christmas luncheon and enjoyed an afternoon of fun and music. Our supporters of the volunteer program generously donated prizes which were given away in a draw. The Villa Colombo Chaplain was present to conduct a blessing for the volunteers. We are fortunate to have our volunteers regularly give their time to make life better for our residents.

Villa Colombo Services for Seniors Introduce New Alzheimer’s Day Program
Villa Colombo Services for Seniors is happy to announce that the Alzheimer’s Day Program will be open on Saturdays beginning January 5, from 8:30am until 4:30pm. Villa Colombo Services for Seniors has been granted additional funding from the LHIN (Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care) to provide this much needed service six days a week to our clients living at home.
Please note that “The Elderly Persons Centre” has had an official name change to “Seniors Active Living Centre” to better reflect the client profile for this day program.
Students Perform at Christmas Concert for Residents
On December 19, our residents at Villa Colombo Toronto were treated to a Christmas concert performed by students from Regina Mundi Catholic School. It was a lovely afternoon of holiday music and festive refreshments.

Annual Solemn Requiem Mass to be Held in Memory of Residents
Villa Colombo Toronto’s annual Solemn Requiem Mass will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in Sala Caboto. Family members are invited to attend this special Mass offered for the repose of the souls of our residents who have passed away from November 2017 to the October 14, 2018.
Father Ralph Paonessa, Chaplain at Villa Colombo Toronto, celebrates this traditional Mass in extraordinary form, which brings family members and staff together to remember and celebrate the lives and deaths of our residents, through hymn and prayer.
Villa Colombo Highlights in October
Villa Colombo Toronto launched their Flu Immunization Clinic on Wednesday, October 24th to promote safe care during influenza season. Residents, staff and visitors lined up to get their vaccination to protect themselves against the flu. Getting the flu shot is highly encouraged, as it reduces hospitalizations and decreases the risk of developing complications, such as pneumonia. Protect yourself and get your flu shot at Villa Colombo Toronto this year.
HERE’S WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO GET THE FLU SHOT:
- The flu shot is your best protection against the flu (influenza).
- The flu shot is not just for people with health problems. Healthy people can also get very sick from the flu and spread it to others.
- By getting the flu shot, you are protecting yourself, your family and others around you who may be at risk of flu complications.
- Influenza is not “just a cold” – it’s a serious illness that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even fatality.
- Once you receive your flu shot, it can take up to 2 weeks to be fully protected against the flu.
Also on October 24th, Villa Colombo Toronto held its first Resident Art Show at Sala Caboto. In 2017, some of the residents at Villa Colombo Toronto participated in a new art program, facilitated by Nick Biagini of Biagini’s Colours. Art programs have many benefits for the seniors including increased socialization, stress relief, improved self-awareness and self-expression, as well as improved motor skills. At the event, Villa Colombo showcased some of the amazing paintings created by the residents to staff, residents and families.

Villa Colombo Toronto Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Extendicare
Villa Colombo Toronto celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Extendicare Canada on August 21. Villa Colombo has been a partner with Extendicare Assist since 2012. Residents, families, staff, volunteers, board members and the VCTA members and representatives from Extendicare enjoyed a fun filled afternoon of food and entertainment in Sala Caboto to commemorate Extendicare on this milestone.
Villa Colombo Toronto Celebrates Ontario Seniors' Month
June is Seniors’ Month in Ontario and Villa Colombo Toronto is celebrating with a variety of events for residents. Events include Concerts in Care on June 4 and Green Screen Pictures in Italy Day on June 9, where residents, staff and family members can take a trip to Italy without leaving Villa Colombo. On June 14, Villa Colombo Toronto will host Resident and Family Porchetta Night where a lovely dinner will be served, complimented by music. Finally, Villa Colombo will once again host Seniors Month Bingo on June 18 where residents have the opportunity to gather together and play Bingo, enjoy special treats and socialize.
Villa Colombo Toronto Begins New Family Support Group
Villa Colombo Homes for the Aged Inc., announces a new monthly Family Support Group to begin Wednesday, June 27, from 6:30 – 7:45 pm. This group will be available for families of Villa Colombo residents, the Villa Charities independent seniors apartments, and any family member from the community who would like to attend. A range of topics will be covered – from dealing with a loved one’s deterioration and the impact on the family, understanding Alzheimer’s and dementia, and the benefits of long-term care. Residents at Villa Colombo Toronto celebrated Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 13 with a variety of activities, including special family meals and parties. It was a special day for everyone at Villa Colombo Toronto to honour mothers and grandmothers!
Villa Colombo Toronto Hosts Dementia Strategy Advisory Committee
Members of the Dementia Strategy Advisory Committee met at the Columbus Centre on March 26 to discuss the LHIN dementia strategy. This committee is paving the way for improved methods of support for unpaid caregivers and improved services and support for individuals living with dementia. The committee was also given a guided toured of the “MAMMA, In the Meantime” exhibition at the Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery.
Villa Colombo Toronto Residents Begin Gardening Club
Spring is in the air! VCT will be starting a new Gardening Club program in April. Residents will have the opportunity to explore the world of gardening – planting seeds and transplanting potted plants as we prepare for the summer months when we can move our garden projects outdoors! Residents will have the opportunity to explore multiple senses as plants are used in baking and cooking programs in future months.
Villa Colombo Toronto Designated Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO)
Villa Colombo has been selected by the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario to become a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) over the period of the next three years.
This is a dynamic partnership that focuses on making a positive impact on patient care though evidence-based practice. The BPSO initiative has been a great success. It provides support to organizations that have formally agreed to implement and evaluate multiple RNAO best practice guidelines over a three year period.
RNAO provides support for implementation through training, access to all available resources, reporting prototypes, Best Practice Champions Network including the Champion Workshops, the Implementation Toolkit and Educator’s Resource, BPG APPs and other implementation resources. RNAO also engages with the BPSO Host in regular meetings, and offers expert mentorship and consultation on guideline dissemination, implementation, uptake, sustainability and evaluation. Furthermore, the BPSO Host and BPSO are paired with mentor organizations, who have already gone through the BPSO Program.
Selected Best Practice Guidelines to be Implemented:
1) Preventing and addressing neglect and abuse in the elderly
2) Promoting safety: Alternative approaches to the use of restrains
3) Assessment and management of pain
Villa Colombo Toronto to Celebrate Activity Professionals Awareness Week
Villa Colombo Toronto will celebrate Activity Professionals Awareness Week, March 4 to 10. The recreation aides at Villa Colombo will be hosting a number of events to celebrate, including displaying resident art work and Montessori kits, and baking in the lobby.
New Arts Programs Arrive at Villa Colombo Toronto
Residents welcomed local artist Nick Biagini, who is instructing weekly painting classes. Participants are working each week on their very own masterpieces with support and guidance from Nick. At the end of the session each participant will have a beautiful canvas to display in their room. Residents also welcomed Tara Pillon, Artistic Director of DanzArts Toronto, who is teaching a weekly dance class for the residents. Villa Colombo Toronto Residents Enjoy Art Lessons, Yoga Therapy in November
The residents of Villa Colombo had an opportunity to enjoy an evening of art, food, wine and music led by local Italian artist Nick Biagini in November. The program has been shown to deliver benefits to seniors, including opportunities for self-expression, enhanced cognitive functioning and improved motor skills. In addition, arts programs decrease stress levels in the elderly, promote memory and increase enjoyment in the residents’ lives! This program began in November and will continue into 2018.
Residents also continue to participate in a special yoga therapy session led by Elaine Florio, a yoga therapist who believes that ‘if you breathe, you can do yoga’. The residents are able to enjoy the benefits of yoga while looking out onto the peaceful views of our gardens. Residents are able to engage in new and stimulating ways which affords wonderful opportunities to build new relationships and have fun. Yoga relaxation techniques have been shown to improve brain function and movement in elderly persons as well as enhance mood and reduce anxiety. In addition, the slow, controlled breathing practices of yoga help manage blood pressure levels while strengthening personal body awareness.
Villa Colombo Recognizes Volunteers at Annual Awards Celebration
The Volunteer Services team at Villa Colombo held its Recognition Awards Celebration on Thursday October 12, 2017 in Sala Caboto. Villa Colombo’s 92 volunteers and 15 students were recognizes for the support they provide to staff, residents and clients in numerous recreational programs, and services. In attendance were volunteers that contributed their time in 2016. Present to enjoy the festivities and thank the volunteers was the chaplain, senior staff, recreation aides, and residents.
Volunteers at Villa Colombo give their time, share their skills, talents, and strengths. They provide a great commitment to programs, the time they give to volunteering makes a huge difference to the seniors of the Italian community. Giving back is something done with pride and from the heart. Each volunteer gives a valuable contribution and plays a part in making a difference to the programs offered each day. In 2016, Villa Colombo Volunteers contributed 28,660 hours.

Villa Colombo Toronto Celebrates Fall Events
Residents at Villa Colombo Toronto enjoyed a Karaoke Night on September 9 where they sang songs from the 1930s, 40s and 50s in the Piazza area. Residents also attended a cherry-picking outing to Niagara-on-the-Lake on September 18. Residents, staff and volunteers will be going apple picking on October 2 and plan to turn the apples they have picked into delicious apple pie!
Villa Colombo Launches New Yoga Program for Residents
Villa Colombo residents will participate in the trial yoga program “Chair Yoga” on August 29. The program will be facilitated by a professional instructor and residents will learn seven wheelchair-focused poses that encourage increased physical activity and mobility.

Villa Colombo Celebrates Canada's 150th Birthday
Residents, staff and volunteers at Villa Colombo celebrated Canada Day with a special Canada 150 art project. The handmade banner recognized the country’s 150th birthday with a colourful display showcased in the main lobby.
CHIN Radio Live Broadcast From Villa Colombo Spreads Awareness of Volunteer Opportunities
CHIN Radio visited Villa Colombo for a live broadcast on Sunday, June 25. Visitors and listeners heard about the wide range of volunteer opportunities available at Villa Colombo, including chapel escorts, garden escorts, meal and special events assistance and the Meals On Wheels program.
Those who visited Villa Colombo or tuned in during the live broadcast were also offered a chance to enter a contest to win a $150 gift card to Ristorante Boccaccio. There were also other prizes and giveaways for those who came to see the live broadcast in person.

Villa Colombo Celebrates Nurses' Week
Every day the Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses and Personal Support Workers of Villa Colombo Toronto go above and beyond for our residents. Nurses’ Week is an opportunity to highlight the day to day work of the Villa Colombo Toronto nursing staff. This year, Nurses’ Week kicked off with a presentation by one of Villa Colombo Toronto’s own Registered Nurses, Lorraine Dunn. Lorraine shared her experiences in international nursing and her work in Egypt. The presentation was followed by the cutting of the Nurses’ Week cake.
Throughout the week, many events brought staff together with colleagues and management to engage in new learning experiences.
Villa Colombo Prepares for Senior's Month
June is Seniors’ Month in Ontario and Villa Colombo is recognizing the special occasion with events throughout the month.
Events include two performances by the North Toronto Community Band (June 5 and June 15 at 6:30pm), Bingo (June 6 at 1:30pm) and Porchetta and Beer Night (June 21 at 6:30pm).
