The Next Phase of the Columbus Centre Redevelopment

We’re excited to announce that Columbus Centre Redevelopment project continues to move forward with the submission of the Draft Plan of Subdivision and Zoning By-law Amendment Applications to the City of Toronto last month.

This is the latest step in the renaissance of the Columbus Centre, the cultural heart of the GTA’s Italian Canadian community, and the TCDSB. This exciting revitalization will see a state-of-the art, combined facility shared by the Columbus Centre and Dante Alighieri Academy Catholic Secondary School.

The new Columbus Centre will provide fully modernized facilities with programs similar to those provided now as well as new programs. A separate, exclusive-use section for the Columbus Centre will house improved space for Villa Charities’ art, dance, music, and culinary programs, fitness facilities, a restaurant and café, new event/banquet space, an art gallery, performing arts theatre and tenant space/administration offices.

Key features of the redeveloped Columbus Centre will include major upgrades to fine arts, music and dance studios, dramatically upgraded athletic facilities, a contemporary culinary studio with digital learning technology, a street presence for Ristorante Boccaccio and a modern glass façade that will bring natural light into Columbus Centre cultural class rooms.

A joint Villa Charities/TCDSB Open House will be held at the Columbus Centre in the near future. Details will be announced at a later date. For more information about the Columbus Centre Redevelopment process, visit our website.

New Exhibit at Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery is all about Toronto

The Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery will welcome a new exhibit by artist Giancarlo Piccin called “My T.O.” on February 8 in the Lower Gallery. The exhibit will run until February 28.

Piccin investigates the relationship between people and their surroundings with his Toronto series. The work begins with an abstract painting and then explores the possibilities of architecture and people as subject matter. By using unusual vantage points, colour and successive layers, the artist encourages the viewer to connect the missing links to form a complete image. It is Piccin’s hope to inspire people to rediscover elements of this great city.

The “My T.O.” exhibit joins “In Between The Lines,” the exhibit currently being showcased in Atrium A & B of the Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery.  “In Between The Lines” highlights the work of Toronto-based artists Yehuda Lang and Simma Sudaley.

For more information on the Joseph D. Carrier Gallery, click here or call 416-789-7011 ext. 300. Admission to the Gallery is free to the public and open Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm.

Shape yourself with Hatha Yoga! Hatha Yoga helps re-condition the system, both body and mind, to affect the highest possible standard of tone, flexibility, physical stamina, mental health, and vigor.

Gentle Hatha Yoga is designed for older adults. In this class, you will learn to meditate and breath correctly though yoga methods that will improve your body posture awareness and self-confidence.

Children will learn how to focus and centre themselves with a dynamic, vinyasa style class, with breathe work and meditation techniques. Children will become stronger, more flexible, confident and build character.

Visualization, breathing exercises and meditation are instructed to help develop focus, relaxation, peace of mind, and overall balance in daily life. Emotional balance, mental benefits, and healthy body image are developed with positive self-awareness and self-esteem.

The class includes games, age-appropriate props and songs to make this a fun-filled hour. Individual and partner postures will be used to help nurture your child’s imagination while encouraging movement and mindful breathing. For children ages 3-8 and an adult participant.

Restorative Yoga is a deeply relaxing practice of supported poses, guided relaxation, yogic breathing, and an extended final resting pose.

Vinyasa Yoga (a root form of Ashtanga Yoga) is characterized by a focus on dynamic connecting posture that creates a flow between the more static traditional yoga postures.

This type of class combines the practice of Yoga with Pilates, applying the principles of core stability in Pilates to common Yoga postures. The class is designed to tone and strengthen the entire body, as well as to reduce stress while improving mental focus.

Villa Colombo Expands its Behavioural Support Team

Villa Colombo Toronto was one of six Long Term Care facilities that was granted $118,000 in funding by the Central Local Health Integration Network (CLHIN), awarded specifically for behavioural support services.  As such, Villa Colombo will be expanding its Behavioural Support (BSO) Team.

As stipulated by the CLHIN, this funding will allow Villa Colombo to add one Registered Practical Nurse BSO Lead and one additional BSO Personal Support Worker to Villa Colombo’s existing Behavioural Support team.

By focusing on quality of care and quality of life for the residents, Villa Colombo’s administration sees this additional funding as an opportunity to hire and train these staff in the specialized skills necessary for identifying and mitigating responsive behaviour, as well as providing quality care to these residents.

Villa Colombo is looking forward to expanding and developing best practices within its Behavioural Support (BSO) team and within the home.
