Celebrate International Women’s Day with Outstanding Cuisine and Culture
Join us for this special event featuring esteemed cultural diversity leader, Gina Valle, PhD, who will present pieces from her powerful exhibit “Legacies” and discuss her work honouring women. “Legacies” is a photo exhibit that portrays Canadian women from 24 different countries of origin, reflecting on their heritage through the eyes of their grandmothers. Guests will also enjoy a wonderful gourmet dinner of classic dishes and authentic Italian cuisine.

The vision of the new shared-use Columbus Centre and Dante Alighieri Academy facility will come to life in a stunning new 3D scale model, which is currently in production. The 1:100 scale model will showcase the revitalized, state-of-the art, four-story building and provide a preview of the new, fully modernized facilities that will be available at the Columbus Centre, such as improved fitness facilities, a street presence for Ristorante Boccaccio and a modern glass façade that will bring natural light into Columbus Centre cultural classrooms.
The scale model will be unveiled at The Venetian Ball 2017 on March 30th at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, and will then be on display at the Columbus Centre. The model will also be available for the public to view at a joint Villa Charities/TCDSB Open House, which will be held at the Columbus Centre in the near future. Details will be announced at a later date.

Montessori Programming Helps Villa Colombo Toronto Find The Person Behind Dementia
Recreation aides and Behavioural Support (BSO) staff at Villa Colombo Toronto completed their Montessori Implementation Workshop Certificate and are excited to launch the latest program.
Villa Colombo Toronto has begun to use the Montessori approach, which is based on the educational principles and practices of renowned Italian physician and childhood educator, Dr. Maria Montessori. Breakthrough research initiated by American psychologist Dr. Cameron Camp has led to the discovery that Dr. Montessori’s educational principles and practices could be adapted and applied to individuals with dementia.
Recreation staff have been using similar strategies for some time now, but this additional training and ready-to-go resource has helped create a bridge to reconnect with people who may seem unreachable. Using these activities, Montessori programming gives seniors the opportunity to use their hands and all other senses to activate and stimulate their minds. Being able to focus on the task at hand and to experience success again helps people with memory loss feel more secure and confident. The Montessori Method focuses on the use of remaining strengths and abilities.
Two Italian-themed Montessori kits have been purchased and implemented on the fifth floor of Villa Colombo Toronto with great success. Residents appear to stay engaged for longer periods of time while exerting their energy in a natural and positive way. We are hopeful that the program can be expanded in the future to benefit more residents and to continue to reduce responsive behaviors.
Volunteers Needed at Villa Colombo Toronto
Villa Colombo Toronto is also looking for volunteers for the residence and for its Meals On Wheels program.
Villa Colombo Toronto supports a leadership model that inspires teamwork and organizational excellence. Villa Colombo staff, volunteers and service providers embody and demonstrate the values of honesty, integrity, excellence, accountability, teamwork, innovation, and trust.
